Visitors Experience

Visitors can reach the castle via a steep path leading to the entrance, or alternatively, ascend via a staircase near Arco’s main square or a trail starting from Piazzetta S. Giuseppe, near the Sarca Bridge. These routes lead to the Costa area, a steep incline between the castle and the town, with a panoramic path through olive groves guiding you to the entrance.

Scenic Views: Upon entering, you’ll find large grassy areas on different levels, unexpected when viewed from below. Historically, these areas may have served as pastures or farmland, as suggested by a 1388 inventory listing livestock and goods inherited by Orsola d’Arco. At the base of a steep rock face lies a 19th-century water collection basin and a parapet protecting the scenic curve of the belvedere, offering sweeping views of the valley.

Towers and Structures: Visitors can explore prisons, towers, bastions, and various rooms, each rich with history. The Great Tower, about 20 meters high, survived the devastations by Vendome, though one wall was destroyed—possibly due to its wooden construction. These structures provide a glimpse into the medieval defenses that once stood strong against invaders.

Artistic Treasures: The castle houses remarkable 14th-century frescoes, featuring scenes such as women playing dice and chess, St. George battling a dragon, and various historical and mythological depictions. These artworks are noted for their expressive faces, suggesting influences from renowned artists of the period.
