Old Customs House
Point of interest – Nago Torbole, Lake Garda
The small port of Torbole, home to the charming ancient Customs House – Casa del Dazio, is one of the most picturesque spots in Garda Trentino. This location is also one of the most photographed and painted by artists worldwide.
It has been a source of inspiration for poets and painters such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Hans Lietzmann. Lietzmann, in particular, found Torbole so enchanting that he lived there for over 50 years, passed away in 1955, and chose to be buried in this idyllic setting.
The Casa del Dazio, a modest yet historically significant building, was originally constructed in the early 18th century to serve as the Austrian Customs House. Later, it became a residence for local fishermen. Since 2000, the building has been owned by the Tonelli family, who have lovingly restored it. Their renovation efforts preserved the building’s ancient Venetian style, and they now open it to the public for special events.
Inside the Customs House, visitors can explore a captivating collection of historical photographs. These images, rich in charm and cultural significance, vividly evoke memories of the past for those who were born and raised in this region. The Tonelli family takes great pleasure in welcoming tourists and residents alike, offering them a journey back in time to discover old scenes and faces that define the heritage of Torbole.
From the balcony of the Customs House, visitors can admire the horizon and enjoy the lively breeze of Lake Garda. This vantage point not only provides stunning views but also a sense of connection to the history and natural beauty that have inspired so many over the centuries. The combination of its historical importance and picturesque setting makes the Old Customs House a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Garda Trentino.
