Desenzano Castle
Museum – Desenzano del Garda, Lake Garda
The Desenzano Castle, likely built on a Roman castrum to defend against barbarian invasions, was reconstructed during the municipal era and fortified in the 15th century, housing 120 homes and a church dedicated to Saint Ambrose.
By the late 15th century, the castle, which originated in the early Middle Ages, was expanded in the southern part to accommodate a garrison, though it never fully transformed into a military fortress. The castle’s tower primarily served as a refuge for the population, with private homes within its walls ready to shelter those living outside during times of danger.
Over time, the castle gradually lost its function as a refuge, continuing to house families even as it fell into disrepair throughout the 19th century. The church of Saint Ambrose within the castle was repurposed as a private residence. The castle’s layout is an irregular rectangle, with a massive entrance tower on the north side protecting the drawbridge, featuring upper-level windows and loopholes for chains. In 1882, the castle became a barracks for infantry, later housing Bersaglieri and Alpine troops until 1943.
Despite numerous modifications, some curtain walls with crumbling battlements and truncated corner towers remain, except the north-east tower, which served as an observatory until 1940. Its terrace offers one of the most beautiful views of Lake Garda. Significant changes include the demolition of an eastern wall section in the 1930s to provide panoramic views, and the partial emptying of a building in the 1950s for a municipal aqueduct tank. In 1969, the municipality reacquired much of the property, repurposing it for public use, while monumental parts remained state property.
Recent restoration efforts have revitalised the castle. In 2007, the keep and parts of the walls were repurposed for exhibitions and cultural events. By 2014, the northern walls and former officers’ quarters were restored for urban use and a conference room. The 2019 restoration of the walls and bell tower allows visitors to explore the patrol walkway and enjoy spectacular views of Lake Garda.
