Old Ponale Road
Outdoor activity – Riva del Garda, Lake Garda
The Ponale Road, located north of Lake Garda, is one of Europe’s most famous and beloved trails, connecting Riva del Garda to the Val di Ledro. This path can be traversed on foot, taking approximately three hours one way, or by mountain bike or bicycle. Before embarking on this journey, it is advisable to check that the trail is open and accessible.
The Old Ponale Road has ancient origins, carved into the rock as early as the mid-19th century. It was closed about 20 years ago but was reopened in 2004 as a cycle-pedestrian path, now celebrated as one of Europe’s most beautiful trails.
The path is suitable for everyone, whether walking or biking. However, pedestrians should be cautious of cyclists who sometimes speed by, causing potential inconvenience. The route is quite long but generally not difficult, except for the final stretch towards Lake Ledro, which involves an uphill forest path.
Walking along the Ponale Road offers unique panoramas with rocky cliffs on one side and the sparkling lake on the other. Along the way, you can also see old military shelters built during the war, adding a layer of historical depth to the experience.
It’s best to choose a season that isn’t too hot for this walk and to carry plenty of water. You can opt for the full round trip, totaling just over 20 kilometers, or choose a shorter loop that is equally beautiful.
To avoid the full round trip of the Ponale Road, you can turn at the junction after the bar and descend towards the gallery along the main road for a short distance, then return to the junction towards Pregasina and re-enter the trail. The walk from Riva del Garda begins with a gentle incline for about 2 kilometers until you reach a right turn for the Val di Ledro.
At this point, the road splits, separating the pedestrian path from the cycling path. You will cross a bridge and continue past a signpost leading to a forest road. After reaching the Val di Ledro and passing the road to Pregasina, you will navigate a series of switchbacks leading to the statue of the Madonna and its panoramic terrace. Here, you can find bars or restaurants in the village for a refreshing break.
The cycle path and pedestrian trail rejoin, leading you into the center of Prè di Ledro. The walk continues towards the locality of Molina and eventually reaches Lake Ledro, home to the Museo delle Palafitte. The Ponale Road is a highly recommended walk for everyone and is an experience not to be missed!
The beautiful Ponale Road walk begins right from the center of Riva del Garda. Here are the steps to get there:
Parking: Park your car at Parcheggio Monte Oro.
Starting the Walk: After parking, head towards the Port of Riva del Garda. Follow the coastline in the direction of Limone. Pass the Riva hydroelectric power plant.
Reaching the Trail: Continue until you reach the Gardesana Occidentale. Look for the sign indicating the trail as D01 towards Ledro.
