Pieve di Tremosine is one of the most significant villages in Tremosine sul Garda and a hidden gem of Lake Garda. It is recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The village sits 413 meters above sea level, perched on a cliff formed by a glacier, overlooking the lake. This medieval village offers a blend of history, stunning views, and cultural experiences.

The name Pieve comes from the Latin word “plebs”, meaning people. It reflects the village’s role as a civil and religious center for Tremosine sul Garda and the surrounding areas. This significance is documented in a papal bull by Pope Urban III in 1186. Pieve’s history dates back to the Neolithic age, with early settlements in areas like Castello and Liss. Roman-era tombstones found in the region and on the parish church wall suggest continuous habitation through Roman times.

In the 8th-9th century, the first Christian chapel was built, later replaced by a larger Romanesque church dedicated to Santa Maria around the year 1000. By the 12th century, this church had become the region’s religious hub. In 1570, it was demolished to build a new church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, adorned with 17th-18th century paintings.

Accessibility

For centuries, Pieve was accessible only by mule tracks and narrow paths, such as the scenic Porto-Pieve Trail. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, three rope cableways were built, connecting the village to Lake Garda. These cableways had stations near the church, Piazza Arturo Cozzaglio, and the churchyard. The Porto-Pieve-Vesio road, known today as Strada della Forra, opened in 1913, significantly improving access to the village.
