Strada della Forra Road
Outdoor activity – Tremosine, Lake Garda
The Strada della Forra is renowned as one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the world and the most stunning around Lake Garda. This breathtaking route winds through the wild gorge carved by the Brasa River, leading from the Lake Garda to Pieve di Tremosine sul Garda. Its dramatic twists and turns with constant views of the lake have made it a favored location for filmmakers, notably serving as a backdrop for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.
Winston Churchill once dubbed the Strada della Forra the eighth wonder of the world, and a correspondent from the German newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung described it as one of the world’s most beautiful roads upon its inauguration. The road ascends from 65 meters at the lakeside to 423 meters at Pieve, attracting tourists from all over the globe.
The history of the Strada della Forra dates back to 1889, when the first project was conceived. Before the road, Tremosine sul Garda could only be reached on foot via the Porto Pieve path and other secondary trails, while goods were transported by a rudimentary cableway. The project was driven by notable figures like Don Giacomo Zanini, Don Michele Milesi, and designer Arturo Cozzaglio, with support from Prime Minister Giuseppe Zanardelli. The road was officially opened on May 18, 1913, fulfilling a long-held dream for the local population with its engineering marvel of bridges and steep curves descending into the Brasa River.
The 6 km route from Campione to Pieve is regulated by traffic lights during peak seasons to manage the flow of cars and motorcycles. Motorcyclists particularly cherish this road, finding it a paradise for riding in any season. For the more adventurous, it can also be explored by bicycle or on foot, offering unique views of Lake Garda from the pedestrian path starting at the first tunnel.
