Varone Waterfalls
Nature Park – Tenno, Lake Garda
The Varone Waterfall Cave Park is located about 3 km north of Riva del Garda, in the direction of Tenno, and is easily accessible by public buses that depart hourly from Riva del Garda.
The Varone Waterfall is one of the most appreciated natural attractions in the Alto Garda region. Public access has been allowed since its inauguration on June 20, 1874, in the presence of King John of Saxony and Prince Nicholas of Montenegro. Since then, the Varone Waterfall Cave Park has become a favorite destination for tourists visiting Lake Garda, offering a picnic area and free parking, making it an ideal spot for a stop.
The waterfall is fed by the underground streams of the beautiful Lake Tenno, forming the Magnone torrent, which plunges into the gorge with a drop of nearly 100 meters. This rare natural spectacle can be fully appreciated thanks to the walkways that allow visitors to admire the waterfall from two different vantage points: one lower and one upper.
Just 50 meters from the ticket office, housed in an interesting building designed at the beginning of the last century by the famous architect Giancarlo Maroni (known for designing the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the residence of Gabriele D’Annunzio in Gardone Riviera), you reach the entrance to the lower cave. Here, you can observe the erosion work on the limestone rocks performed by the water over approximately 20,000 years, venturing into the gorge until you reach the final part of the water’s descent.
After a brief return along the path, you ascend through the park and botanical garden, where you can admire many varieties of plants, including non-native species that coexist perfectly thanks to the unique microclimate of Lake Garda. At the end of this pleasant walk, you finally reach the upper cave, the main observation point of the waterfall. Access is made possible by a 15-meter tunnel, carved by human hands, leading into the mountain. The scene is breathtaking: a true chasm, a fantastic gorge completely carved by water, nearly 100 meters deep. The roar, the air currents, and the mist from the water will envelop you, providing a unique experience like no other.
