Vittoriale degli Italiani
Museum – Gardone Riviera, Lake Garda
Perched on the scenic shores of Lake Garda in Gardone Riviera, the Vittoriale degli Italiani is a grand estate and museum complex that stands as a testament to the multifaceted genius of Italian writer, poet, and nationalist Gabriele D’Annunzio. This monumental site, spanning around nine hectares, includes gardens, a theatre, a warship, and various buildings, all imbued with the spirit and eccentricities of D’Annunzio.
The Vittoriale degli Italiani, or “The Shrine of Italian Victories,” was D’Annunzio’s home from 1921 until his death in 1938. It was transformed into a national monument with the help of architect Giancarlo Maroni. D’Annunzio conceived the Vittoriale not only as his residence but also as a space to celebrate his personal achievements and Italian patriotism. The estate is a physical representation of D’Annunzio’s life, blending history, art, and personal memorabilia.
The heart of the Vittoriale is the Prioria, D’Annunzio’s house, which is a maze of opulently decorated rooms filled with a vast array of books, artworks, and peculiar objects that reflect the poet’s tastes and obsessions. Each room is meticulously arranged, from the dark and introspective “Leopardi Room” to the light-filled “Leda Room,” named after the famous Greek myth.
Surrounding the Prioria are the extensive gardens, designed to blend with the natural beauty of Lake Garda. These gardens feature a mix of formal and informal elements, with statues, fountains, and an array of plant species. One of the most striking features is the Mausoleum, located at the highest point of the estate, where D’Annunzio is buried alongside his loyal followers. The Mausoleum offers a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding area, making it a place of contemplation and reverence.
The Vittoriale also boasts an open-air amphitheatre, inspired by ancient Roman theatres, which hosts concerts and performances during the summer. This amphitheatre can seat up to 1,500 spectators and offers a stunning backdrop of Lake Garda, enhancing the cultural experience.
One of the most unique aspects of the Vittoriale is the Puglia, a warship embedded into the hillside gardens. This ship, given to D’Annunzio by the Italian navy, symbolises his naval exploits and adventurous spirit. Visitors can explore the ship’s deck and imagine the maritime adventures it represents.
The estate includes several museums, such as the “D’Annunzio Segreto” museum, which displays personal items and lesser-known aspects of the poet’s life, and the “Museo d’Annunzio Eroe,” dedicated to his military exploits and political influence. These museums provide deeper insight into D’Annunzio’s complex personality and the historical context of his actions.
Today, the Vittoriale degli Italiani is managed by the Fondazione Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, which continues to preserve and promote D’Annunzio’s legacy. The estate attracts thousands of visitors each year, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It stands as a symbol of Italian pride and creativity, inviting guests to explore the intriguing world of one of Italy’s most enigmatic figures.
